Plum and Gold Nails

Fall weather is here, and that means it’s time to bundle up in cozy clothes and paint our nails in equally warm and luxurious tones! With this look, I was inspired by the colours of the changing leaves – the golds and purples especially! 

I’m very happy with how this look turned out! The way the plum polish fades into the gold looks so pretty. And with these fun fingertips, I am able to check the first thing off of my Fall To-Do List! If you’d like to try these out for yourself, here’s how I did it:

1.  Slick on a basecoat (if you have thin, ridged nails like me, I highly recommend Essie’s “Fill the Gap” basecoat. It gives you a perfectly smooth nail surface to work with!)
2. Apply a plum-coloured polish. I used OPI Plum Full of Cheer. Let dry completely.

3. Once the base colour has dried, apply a thin, uneven coat of a metallic gold polish just to the tips (I used OPI Gift of Gold): Use a very small amount of polish – you almost want the brush to be dry so that you get a gentle fade instead of a hard line. Concentrate more of the colour at the tip of your nail, and run the dry brush down from there to extend the colour and get a fade effect.
4. Apply a topcoat and enjoy your sparkly, fall-inspired fingers!

Upcycled Sweater Slipper Boots

It's getting chilly, ladies and gents! I'm a huge slipper person, so when Buzzfeed blogger Pippa Armbrester contacted me with the challenge of coming up with an upcycled slipper DIY, I was so in! This DIY project will show you how to create your own cute and cozy slipper boots from an old sweater - and it couldn't be easier. You don't even need a sewing machine! I think these would make excellent Christmas presents for basically anyone on your list. Here's how you do it:

1. Collect your supplies. You’ll need scissors, pins, yarn, a large darning needle, and an old sweater (try to find something with a tight enough weave that it won’t begin to unravel when you cut it - felted wool works great for this)

2. Trace your foot. Make a rough outline of your foot on a piece of paper or cardstock. Give yourself about 1.5cm of extra space around the edge for comfy slippers and easy sewing. Cut out your shape, and repeat for the other foot.

3. Cut the sole pieces. Place each cutout on the body-area of the sweater, and cut around them to create two sole pieces. It is best if you use double-sided tape to keep the paper from slipping around while you are cutting!

4. Check the boot length. Stick your foot into the sleeve of the sweater through the opening at the wrist. Pull the fabric around your leg to the desired boot length.

5. Snip around your foot. Very carefully, cut the fabric of the sleeve away from the sole of your foot. You are trying to make it so that just the bottom of your foot is exposed. Now you have your leg piece!

6. Pin it together. Connect the sole piece to the leg piece with large pins. Start with one pin at the toe of your bootie, and one pin at the heel. Then stretch the fabric as necessary to line the two pieces up and pin them together.

7. Blanket stitch. With the pins in place, blanket stitch the sole piece and the leg piece together. To do a blanket stitch, (1) push your needle through both layers of fabric from the top (2) pull the yarn through until only a small loop remains (3) bring your needle back down through the loop (4) pull the yarn tight. You can also add a blanket stitch around the opening of your boot to make it look extra polished!

8. Try it on! Pull on your new upcycled sweater slipper-boots, and get cozy!

Architectural Letters

3D Architectural Letters are very à la mode in the home right now, but they can be pretty expensive in stores. Here is a DIY project that will let you create your own architectural letters from cardstock and paper cups. These are so much fun!

You’ll Need:


ONE: Cut out your letters from a large piece of cardstock or chipboard. Be sure to use the first one you cut as a template for the second one so that both sides are exactly the same.

TWO: Glue down your paper cups to one of the cut-out letters. Alternate the direction of the cups each time. You can bend the cups a bit to fit within your design – make sure none of the cup is hanging over the edge of your letter.

THREE: Glue the second side of the letter on top of the cups. Let dry completely before moving on.

FOUR: Working with small strips, tape up your letter to create a 3D shape. You want the whole thing to be completely covered in tape, as smooth as you can make it! If you want to be able to paint on your letter, be sure to use a tape that isn't too slippery on the outside. I chose a paper packing tape and it worked well. 

FIVE: Decorate! I first painted mine blue, then wrapped it randomly with string and used white spray paint on top. Then I peeled off the string and voila!

Warm Mixed Olives and Chorizo

Today I’d like to share one of my favorite tapas-style recipes: Warm Mixed Olives and Chorizo. With deep and fragrant flavors, this dish is perfect for the fall. The salty olives, spicy chorizo, and sweet orange slices go incredibly well together, and are not only mouth-watering, but quite pretty on the table as well!

Warm Mixed Olives and Chorizo (Recipe from CanadianLiving)


4 oz (113 g) smoked chorizo sausages
1/2 small navel orange
2 tbsp (30 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup (250 mL) unpitted oil-cured black olives
1 cup (250 mL) unpitted brined black olives
1 cup (250 mL) unpitted large green olives
2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1 tsp (5 mL) hot pepper flakes
1 tbsp (15 mL) fresh sage leaves, thinly sliced


1. Slice chorizo into thin rounds; set aside.
2. Thinly slice orange into half-moon shapes; set aside.
3. In large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat; cook chorizo for 1 minute.
4. Add oil-cured and brined black olives, green olives, garlic and hot pepper flakes; cook, stirring occasionally, until warmed through and fragrant, about 3 minutes.
5. Stir in sage and orange; cook until orange starts to break down, about
two minutes. Remove from heat; cover and let stand for 10 minutes. Serve warm.
